Care of Teak

Latest Newsletter

Timberland Windows & Doors specialises in the crafting of solid Zimbabwean Teak. Occasionally, a project is carried out in M’Chibi (Guirbourtia Coleosperma), Mukwa (Pterocarpus Angolensis) or African Pod Mahogany (Afzelia Quanzensis). Unfortunately the supply of these species is erratic and unpredictable. Timbers other than teak are therefore, subject to availability.

All our timbers are purchased as felled logs and then processed through our own sawmill and kilns. This control enables us to select only the finest grades for the manufacturing process.

Zimbabwean Teak (Baikiaea Plurijuga)
An attractive, even-textured hardwood which is extremely durable. Dark red-brown in colour and fine grained, this timber was used extensively for railway sleepers in the early 1900’s. In the latter half of the century it has been used for parquet flooring and furniture. The London Corn Exchange when rebuilt in 1952, used B. plurijuga for its special grooved parquet floor. It is still there today, having withstood nearly a half century of abrasive use.

B. plurijuga is found growing in Kalahari sand areas, where it is extensively protected by large areas of National Park and Forestry Reserve within Zimbabwe.

The Natural Beauty of Wood
Timberland Windows & Doors actively promotes and favours the inclusion of the natural defects found in all indigenous hardwoods. The imperfections or differences in form that can be seen in our finished products are the signature of craftsmanship and respect for the material. Each tree has taken many years to grow - and naturally grown hardwoods have knots, fissures and grain variations - these represent a special and unique record of the history of the tree, and the wood thereafter.
